GLASS PROCESSOR SCOOPS SANDWELL’S BEST BUSINESS INNOVATION AWARD

Specialist glass processor and manufacturer MiGlass has won Best Business Innovation at the recent Sandwell Business Awards for a project that not only created a world class manufacturing solution but created 15 new jobs and three apprenticeships into the bargain.

One of the largest independent glass processors and glass manufacturers in Europe, MiGlass has been producing speciality glass at its Smethwick site for more than 80 years. The company produces speciality glass for offices, retail, leisure, home and transport, specialising in decorative safety glass.

MiGlass secured the prestigious Best Business Innovation Award in recognition for its investment in machinery, factory space and people to create a unique, cutting edge solution for producing balustrade panels. Balustrades made from MiGlass produced toughed glass can be found in schools, shopping centres and offices across the world. The new Vertical CNC line resulted in MiGlass creating several new jobs as well as taking on three young people as apprentices. The project was supported with an LEP grant.

MiGlass Managing Director Alan Taylor and Mi Glass Operations Director Glenn Bicknell were presented with the award at a glittering ceremony at Sandwell College from Jan Britton, Chief Executive of Sandwell Council and Sameena Ali-Khan of Central TV.

Alan Taylor, who is also a Sandwell Business Ambassador, said:

“MiGlass has been producing glass in Sandwell for more than 80 years and we are proud to be continuing Birmingham’s glass making heritage by investing in our Smethwick site with innovative solutions that meet the needs of today’s leading architects and building contractors.

“The fact that we have also been able to create jobs including new apprenticeships to bring ‘new blood’ into the glass industry is also great news for the Sandwell local community. We are delighted with the award”.
