Sandwell Business Ambassadors raise concerns to Westminster

The Sandwell Business Ambassadors (SBA) recently visited the Houses of Parliament to meet with Sandwell’s Members of Parliament and discuss the key challenges and opportunities facing local businesses.

A shared commitment to business growth

Starting at Portcullis House, the day began with a guided tour of Westminster, led by Sarah Coombes MP. The Ambassadors had the opportunity to visit both the House of Lords and the House of Commons, where they were given insights into the history of the Parliament. Along the way, they heard fascinating stories and historical facts about Westminster.

Following the tour, the SBA met with Sandwell MPs, including Antonia Bance (Tipton and Wednesbury), Sarah Coombes (West Bromwich), Gurinder Singh Josan (Smethwick) and Alex Ballinger (Halesowen and Cradley Heath).

During the discussion, the SBA highlighted many pressing concerns for businesses in Sandwell, including rising taxation, changes to National Insurance, minimum wage increases and additional regulatory challenges. These issues are placing significant strain on private companies, making it harder for businesses to grow and maintain financial stability.

Alan Taylor, speaking on behalf of the SBA, emphasised the importance of the visit:

We are very thankful to our Sandwell MPs for inviting us to Westminster. It was a productive meeting where we had the opportunity to share our experiences and discuss the barriers to business growth. Issues such as the National Insurance hike, minimum wage changes and increasing red tape are real concerns for businesses in Sandwell, impacting growth and financial stability. It was agreed that skills and training are barriers to employment and strong well paid jobs which need widespread thought and both national and local solutions”

Addressing challenges

The Midland Met Learning Campuswas highlighted as a strong example of how investment in skills development can drive local employment and social mobility. However, concerns were raised about the cost of hiring apprentices, particularly for smaller businesses that may struggle to navigate the funding and support available.

Reflecting on the visit, Sarah Coombes MP said:

It was delightful to be able to welcome the Sandwell Business Ambassadors to the Houses of Parliament. I recognise the key role our businesses play in supporting our local economy and am determined to help them grow and create more opportunities for people in the borough. I appreciate the group speaking openly and honestly about their perspectives, and I look forward to working together to advocate for Sandwell on a national platform.”

Championing Sandwell’s business community

Throughout the visit, the SBA reinforced their commitment to representing Sandwell’s business community and driving positive change. As a collective of business leaders, the group dedicates their time to supporting economic development in the borough, advocating for policies that enable businesses to thrive. The visit to Westminster was a significant step in strengthening the relationship between Sandwell’s business leaders and policymakers.

The SBA plans to continue engaging with Westminster on behalf of Sandwell businesses, ensuring that key concerns are heard at the highest levels.
