West Bromwich Town Hall and Central Library renovation unveiled
31st October 2024West Bromwich is celebrating the transformation of two of its most iconic Grade II listed buildings, the West Bromwich Town Hall and Central Library following a significant restoration and refurbishment project.
The works, which began in November 2023, have been meticulously executed, preserving the historical essence while ensuring the structures are fit for future generations.
The project, funded by the Government’s Towns Fund programme and completed by contractor Morgan Sindall Construction, focused on preserving and enhancing these architectural treasures. Key restorations included:
- High-level stone and brick repairs to the main chimney, securing the integrity of this historic feature.
- New detailed timber work and external decorations, restoring the original charm and character of both buildings.
- Extensive lead work to the finial and dome of the cupola, highlighting the grandeur of the Town Hall.
- Urgent repairs to the Town Hall roof to address long-standing weather-related issues.
- Internal modifications to install a Changing Places Facility, ensuring accessibility for all.
In addition to the restoration, the project has delivered immense value to the local community. Morgan Sindall Construction made a substantial local investment, with 41% of project funds spent within a 20-mile radius. The project also engaged 135 local workers, including 34 Sandwell residents, alongside 18 work experience students, a graduate site manager, and seven new apprentices specializing in scaffolding, construction, joinery, and electrical work.
Educational engagement was another highlight, with over 84 hours of activities for institutions such as Sandwell College and Birmingham City University. These included site tours, presentations, and lectures, ensuring local students could connect with the project.
Councillor Peter Hughes, Sandwell Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Infrastructure, said: “The Town Hall and Central Library have long been at the heart of West Bromwich, serving as key cultural and civic hubs. With the renovations complete, these buildings are now ready to continue their legacy, offering improved facilities and a welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike.
One of our Ambassadors and chair for Sandwell’s Towns Fund board for West Bromwich Christine Hinson added, “Following the refurbishment of around 4,000 square meters of space and many much-needed repairs, we are delighted that the Town Hall now offers excellent performance, event, and exhibition spaces for everyone in the borough to benefit from, and we hope that it greatly contributes to creating a cultural and entertainment offer that can be used by all, but especially the young people of the town. We also hope that it will help kick-start the wider regeneration by attracting some private sector investment to the surrounding area.”
The project has contributed over £24,000 back into the community through donations and initiatives supporting local charities, including the Kaleidoscope Plus Group, Sandwell Children Trust Fun Day, and resources for Sandwell Visually Impaired. This ambitious restoration underscores Sandwell Council’s commitment to preserving its heritage and supporting community growth.
