Help seed new meadows in West Bromwich

Community arts organisation Multistory and The Wildlife Trust are inviting local people to help seed two new meadows in West Bromwich on Thursday 28 September.

The flower-rich meadows will be planted at the New Square Community Garden. They will include a range of species that establish well and flower over a long period. The Wildlife Trust will prepare the ground before volunteers begin planting and seeding.

This is just the latest in a long list of urban greening events and initiatives as part of the three-year Towns Fund Urban Greening Programme. Multistory is working in partnership with Sandwell Council and local community groups to deliver a creative programme called Green Roots in West Bromwich.

Green Roots was launched in October 2022 and is designed to promote, educate and influence understanding about the environment. It also aims to increase opportunities for Sandwell residents, groups and students to collaborate with artists and project partners through a programme of creative activities, training and apprenticeships.

Boosting education and wellbeing

Alongside the meadows, there will also be an eight-week, Level 1 training course for twelve young people from Sandwell College that focuses on surveying and tool use. There will also be walks led by the Wildlife Trust, a wildlife trail guide connecting West Bromwich high street with Dartmouth Park and Sandwell Valley. The results of photography workshops on the theme of ‘Change is Coming’ are currently displayed along West Bromwich high street.

Councillor Peter Hughes, Sandwell Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and WMCA, said: “Our green spaces are not just a wonderful community asset for Sandwell residents to enjoy, they can also help improve both physical health and mental wellbeing by providing a green and welcoming place to relax and take a moment out of people’s everyday lives.”

If you would like to take part in seeding the meadows on Thursday 28 September, please email isobeljones@multistory.org.uk or call 0121 569 2881. There are two time slots – 10am to midday, and 1pm to 3pm. People can attend for as long or as short as they like.
